Side of house above A/C unit OK?

Postby applestar » Tue Jun 09, 2009 11:40 am

I'm expecting delivery of a ready-made bat house in a few days. I already see some potential problems with this one (like 1" spacing vs. the recommended 3/4", etc.) but I guess I'll deal with that later -- I was thinking maybe retro-fit with cedar shingles?

My main question is I have 2 potential locations. One is on the SSW gable end of the 1 story attached garage. The outside heat pump unit sits approx. 2 feet away from the wall immediately below. It would mean noise, and updraft fan action when A/C or heat is on. The 2 feet space is a "dead zone" where I really can't plant anything (though weeds inevitably make headway there) so in terms of guano depository, it's ideal, whether I put a receptacle there or not.

The other location is on the same SSW gable end of the 2 story house, but the foundation here is thickly planted with daylilies at the moment. I can mount the bat house a little bit higher here, however.

Thanks in advance for your advice to this newbie!

Okay, the house is here. Haven't opened the box yet as I want to do that with the kids.
It's an unstained model so I still need to stain it and possibly do that modification I talked about. I HAVE received 1 response via PM, but would love to hear from others... unless I'm presenting a very obviously answered problem.... But I can take it -- I really want to learn and hear the whys and why nots. So thanks for taking your time!

I would put it in this spot.

I agree with Joe. If you were to put the house above the A/C unit condenser it probably wouldn't be occupied since they give off a great amount of heat, airflow, and some noise that would disturb the bats.

Good luck!

Thanks for your responses. I guess I have to agree with you, though it would've been SO convenient if they would be amenable to staying over the A/C! (mumble, mumble)  Let's get a colony established around here first, then I can experiment with the questionable location with a 2nd box as long as there is no question of danger to the pups and the young.
