Mesh virsus Groves

Postby dasycneme » Fri Dec 26, 2008 4:15 pm

Hi Guys, :???: We see many boxes with mesh to aid the landing and climbing of bats into the boxes and some with groves, I favour groves BUT they are far more difficult to produce, I had a small table saw which was adjusted to cut a small grove using a jig, this was great for small boxes up to 2 foot, however being gready I am now trying a Proxxon router http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=580210&filter_cat=&manufacturer_id=Proxxon&name=&user_search=&sfile=1&jump=48 with small (2mm) bits. I am also looking at a hand held (small) rotory saw http://www2.westfalia.net/shops/tools/power_tools_and_accessories/wood_saws/circular_saw/527446-circular_saw.htm which are available in the US, rare in the UK. So with all of this expense should I really just spend my hard earned cash on plastic mesh and stainless steel staples. Have there been cases of bats getting caught in the mesh? Does the mesh last? I want 10 years (hopeful) life from my boxes. So how are your results or do both systems work to perfection. Other methods of grooving also gratefully received.
Happy New Batting Year

Here is a link to picures of a method for cutting grooves/saw kerfs with a circular saw. I found this to be very effective and will use it again this winter building many bat houses for the upcoming season!

This is my jig for smaller boxes, I am going to try a small hand held saw for large boxes (waiting delivery)

The top picture is a small saw bench with the jig attached

Next a sliding jig / platform, the wood is placed on this and slid back & forth, the lines aid the distance of the grooves

Here you can see the blade, raised slightly for the photograph

And these are the groves.
Cheers
