Hibernating bat in basement

Have bats and need help? Post it Here!

While cleaning my basement, I closed a door and a bat fell on to the floor.  He/she was apparently between the door and brick wall.  I don't want to throw it out because its winter and cold out and it would probably die. Am I right?  The bat seems to be ok and right now I have a bucket over it.  There is a 6 to 8" diameter opening to an old wood burning chimney in the basement wall so I'm guessing that's where he got in.  I'm thinking about putting him back in the chimney and place a screen over the opening.  That way he can get out the top come spring and yet stay reasonably warm over the winter.  Is that a reasonable idea?  My alternative is to wait for some warmer weather and release him.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

I think that placing him into the chimney and screening over the hole into the basement is the best option for it's survival. :D                                                            Even though you did not state where you live, I am about 90% sure that you have a big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus). They are extremely resilient to colder temperatures, and it should find it's way out in the Spring or during a period of warmer weather.
