baby bats on bed

Postby babsash » Thu Jun 25, 2009 12:35 pm

hello

im in india. after investigating strange squeaking on my balcony i discovered baby bats in a gap in wall.
earlier i heard some rustling & 1 came in. he didnt want to go but eventually he went on my pillow & i managed to carry it out. he can fly only a little i think. foolishly i left door open as wanted to check on him (he was v sweet & was worried he was ok). he came back in & didnt want to go again.
he took a fancy to my bed unfortunately before i could stop him. i had read on net in the interim too
that bat can carry rabies so thought not a good idea to spend the night together!
i had to pick him up, he didnt struggle, to eject him....

1. why do they come in? its a v bright room
2. is rabies a real threat? i washed my hands but short of going to doc which seemed a bit extreme, i didnt know what to do - he didnt bite. hes been on matress too....
3. should i always keep door shut? its v hot here...

thanks for any info/advice.

Seeking a roost or escaping excess heat or there are other reasons such as young bats being disoriented.

Less than 1/2 of 1 percent of bats are rabid in the U.S. India may vary slightly

If possible, put up a screen on the door to keep bats out and cool air in.

thanks for any info/advice.
